Hey, my name is Xiaoying, and Maggie is my English name. I live in Chinese Hall with students who take Chinese classes, like to speak Chinese and explore Chinese culture or simply love pandas (jk). On Tuesday and Thursday, from 3p.m. to 5p.m. , I teach intermediate and advanced Chinese Conversation Class in Chinese Lounge of Oldenborg. In the class, students and I usually do some fun activities to learn Chinese. On Friday, I assist professors of Asian Department to teach elementary Chinese class. For Friday’s teaching, I usually help students review the lesson they learned in this week and we also play some fun games together. From Monday to Friday, I go to Oldenborg dining hall to enjoy lunch with all students who want to practice or speak Chinese. We often talk about our daily activities or describe the dishes on the table. There is usually IRC held on the other side of the dining hall, too. If the topic is about China, students and I often go to listen to the lecture and students can even ask the lecturer questions in Chinese. The other fun part of my job is to find various cultural activities related to China or Chinese culture under the coordination of other departments at school. For example, we have moon cakes and lantern riddles on Mid-Autumn Day and professors from Asian Department join us to make dumplings on Spring Festival. Besides these, each semester I also take students to go for 1 off-campus activities. We have been to Chinese acrobats and traditional Chinese dancing. Each month, I also hold a Study Break for students. Most of the time, I choose a Chinese snack and students and I make the snack together. We also play Chinese games such as Mahjong, Chinese poker game, etc. Besides teaching, I also take 2 or 3 classes as a student every semester. I have taken Pedagogy, Japanese, ballet, Global Asian American and Asian American Religion. For each course, professors are super nice and I learn from both professors and students a lot. It not only help me with my English and subject studies, but also gives me a precious opportunity to do projects with students and to understand students’ way of working and studying in the U.S. better. And this helps me a lot in my own Chinese teaching, too.
